Snorıng

Direct notification by your partner or friends that you are snoring during sleep or if you are aware of your snoring, the fear of falling asleep in a group and becoming embarrassed is very disturbing for those who suffer from this problem.

Well, do we have sufficient information on snoring? Why do we snore? May snoring be a condition which adversely affect of health status or may it be a manifestation of our diseases?

What should be said first is that 35% of males over 35 years of age do snore intermittently or depending on their position of lying. Snoring when you are lying on your back after a busy day and drinking some alcohol is generally benign. Especially in the above-mentioned conditions where there is no cessation of breathing when snoring, this causes a problem for those who are in bed nearby rather than for the snoring person (as they experience difficulty in falling asleep). In such cases, the treatment is given not for those who snore, but for the sleep health of their bed partners or roommates and depending on their decision. However, snores which occur almost every day, are highly severe, and are accompanied by cessations of breath during sleep pose a major health problem which require treatment because they both shorten the life span of the patient and ensue risks for important diseases. It is well known that people over 60 years of age and with a cessation of breath during sleep have threats to life and are predisposed to many heart and respiratory diseases. It should remembered that this may be a condition which increases the risks for death at bed, uncontrollable hypertension, and myocardial infarction.

In addition to all of these, snoring people have many other complaints such as difficulty in waking up in the morning, a tendency to sleep throughout the day, extreme desire to sleep in traffic jams, when watching TV or after lunch, which impair the quality of life. Many fatal traffic accidents are known to happen due to a tendency to sleep and loss of concentration in people who have sleep apnea and snoring.

Well, what should we do? First of all, getting rid of the kilos in excess of our ideal body weight will be a good start. Many simple snores may be prevented by reducing alcohol consumption before sleep at night, going into the bed with at least 4-hour fasting and avoiding the use of tranquilizing medications before sleeping. In particular, if we cannot breathe through our nose during the night and therefore, if we have to sleep with an open mouth, then snoring will be inevitable. An open nose and a closed mouth is the golden rule for a healthy sleep.

If snoring and cessation of breathing continues during sleep though these measures are taken, it should always be treated. You should apply to a center where a "sleep test" may be performed to evaluate your sleeping pattern and a hospital stay for one night is necessary for the assessment of the severity of the condition and for the determination of the treatment modality to be used. The Memorial Hospital possesses all the necessary technical equipment and accumulation of experience for the treatment of this illness. The main rule in surgical therapy is to ensure the tightness of the uvula and soft palate which block the air way during sleep at night. Currently, the "radiofrequency" surgery is the most valid technique with best results for ensuring the tightness of these tissues in the mouth.
