Brain Health Protection Program
About the Department
TO PROTECT AND IMPROVE YOUR BRAIN HEALTH, DO YOUR BRAIN CHECK UPS
Turkey’s First “Brain Health Protection Program” is at Memorial.
Increasing complaints of forgetfulness with advancing ages might not get the attention they deserve as they are sometimes attributed to the busy schedule and sometimes to the monotonous pace of life. However, the forgetfulness complaints need to be taken seriously and necessary precautions must be taken under a specialist’s care since the protection of the brain health is one of the leading factors to live a healthy life.
In order for the brain health to be improved and protected, Turkey’s first “Brain Health Protection Program” is implemented. Memorial, always leading the way as the pioneer of our country, started a very important work to protect mental capacity which largely contributes to the life quality. In Memorial Brain Health Protection Program, people are presented with a significant course of action list that ranges from the tests that should be regularly done to healthy nutrition, mental exercises and lifestyle changes, by means of Brain Check Ups based on the unheeded complaints of forgetfulness. And when any disease is diagnosed, all necessary treatments are applied with a multidisciplinary approach.
FORGETFULNESS MAY APPEAR IN ALL AGE GROUPS
Mental and psychological problems that appear through all stages of life, occur as a result of factors that threaten brain health and they are increasing in prevalence with each passing day. At which extent the brain functions fail to deliver the expected performance, changes from one person to another. Forgetfulness appears as the most frequently found cognitive grievance in all ages. When a person has a physical or psychological ailment, he/she is able to define when this situation first started, its severity, the changes it caused on his/her body and its many other characteristics for the doctor. However, for the persons who have a grievance for forgetfulness, it is not that easy to define their situation. Most of the time, it is hard to distinguish the effects caused by forgetfulness which insidiously starts to develop from the natural flow of life. Anyone can experience forgetfulness any day, but at which point these forgetfulnesses start to have a medical significance? It is a hard question to provide with an answer. Forgetfulness, as a natural process of the brain, is not a herald of disease for most of the time. This is why it is very important that the forgetfulness complaints must be properly evaluated by the specialists.
YOUR MENTAL CAPACITY CAN BE MEASURED
The status of mental capacity can be measured by means of certain mental tests. The point to take into consideration for these tests is; to choose the tests that can be applied to everyone without being prone to any effects from their culture, language and education. It is also crucial that the tests to be applied should be sensitive to the new changes that occur over time. One of the most sensitive tests that provide evaluation in digital environment is “Cambridge Cognition” CANTAB test. This test, may conceptually be seen as similar to EKG tests applied during check ups. For example; just like EKG is applied to monitor our heart’s health condition, metal tests can monitor our brain health.
PROTECTING YOUR BRAIN HEALTH STARTS WITH
MEASURING YOUR MENTAL CAPACITY
Measurement of the mental capacity not only identifies and treats the issues related with brain health but also provides such as following:
Understanding what impacts on brain health are caused by the environmental and biological effects over time.
To be able to determine the necessary attempts that will improve the brain health.
To be able to make effective and reliable drug therapies.
To extinguish any unnecessary worries by identifying the symptoms that do not specify any sign of disease.
THE WAY THAT LEADS TO BRAIN HEALTH PASSES FROM PROTECTING THE BLOOD VESSEL HEALTH
The risks threatening the heart and blood vessel health such as hypertension, diabetes, cholesterol, wrong diet, obesity and sedentary lifestyle are particular concerns to brain health. It should not be forgotten that the persons who cannot fix these errors in their lives are prone to the risks of having a stroke and suffering from dementia which is also known as senility, in the later periods of their lives.

Your acquired results will be reviewed by our doctors Assoc. Prof. Dr. Yakup Krespi or Prof. Dr. Türker Şahiner who are specialized in this field and then they will give you the necessary advices.
What kind of a mental evaluation method is CANTAB?
CANTAB test is a computerized neuropsychological evaluation battery that makes active evaluation of cognitive performance and is being used today at nearly more than 800 universities in 80 countries. It can recognize cognitive problems even in people who don’t have memory troubles. After the field of problem in a person is identified by the neurology specialist, the subtests that are chosen accordingly which take approximately half an hour to conclude, are performed in the accompaniment of a professional assistant.
While CANTAB makes an effort towards correct and meticulous results of computerized psychological tests, it also possesses the large spectrum that is required from a neuropsychological battery. Its contents include memory and attention tests, tests that survey coordination and decision making. Its practice is suitable for all age groups. As nonverbal stimuli are used in most of the tests, it is a test that is independent to culture and language. As a result of using nonverbal tests, which means the ones that do not include words, the result is not affected by the language of the person who is taking the test. CANTAB tests consist of abstract components that include different shapes, colors and lines. These are independent from the shapes and objects which a person might associate with the real world, which makes the CANTAB test culturally independent, as well.
Although a lot of cognitive tests still seem like they are time consuming but cheaper, they use pen and paper technique which increases the costs in the long run.
At the same time, utilization of certain tests that use pen and paper create difficulty in making comparison with previously analyzed data. CANTAB test, in this sense, is both practical and efficient in monitoring and watching the performance of the individual in the long term.
CANTAB test results provide an opportunity to make comparisons with the data taken from completely normal 4000 subjects and accumulated in a data pool. As a consequence of this, it holds substantial advantage over other similar tests.
Which blood tests will be taken from me?
In this program, just as it is with most check up programs, your blood analyses are made for the purpose of the initial screening which are generally used for identifying your vascular risk factors that affect the health condition of the heart veins and especially of the brain veins.
Will my genetic risk be evaluated in this program as well?
In Brain Health Protection Program, your Apo E gene polymorphism will be tested, which is known as the brain’s most significant common risk ground for both vascular and dementia (or senility) risks.
How will you follow-up my situation?
Once the results of all your initial assessments and the results of any possible tests that might be required from you after your doctor’s appointment are obtained, you will be invited again within 2 weeks with those results. And if it is necessary, your follow-up appointments will be made at six-month intervals.
