Cancer, which has increased rapidly in recent years, is the most common cause of death in the world after heart disease. Among the cancers common in women, there are types belonging to genital organs, especially breast cancer. According to data from the Statistics Institute of Turkey it was revealed that 12% of all deaths that occurred in 2002 in Turkey were caused by cancer. In 2012, this rate increased to 21%. It is stated that these rates will increase more in the coming years and cancer-related deaths will reach deaths from heart diseases.
Gynecological cancers called female cancers are listed as follows.
- Uterine cancer (uterus)
- Cervical cancer (cervix)
- Ovarian cancer (ovarian)
- Tube cancer (tuba uterina)
- Vulva cancer
- Vaginal cancer
Factors that prepare the basis for cancer;
Industrialization, increased environmental and air pollution, nutrition with instant foods, many chemical products such as cigarettes, disrupt the structure of inhibitory genes that prevent cancer and tumor formation in the human organism, paving the way for the development of cancer cells. These negative factors are unlikely to be prevented or reduced. Therefore, the truth of cancer should be accepted and precautions should be taken.
Cancer-related developments in health informatics are improving.
Despite the rapid increase in the number of cancer cases, early diagnosis of cancer is possible thanks to the important steps taken in the field of health technology. In addition, the increase of medical knowledge and surgical experience makes the treatment more effective. Clinical and molecular studies of reproductive system cancers have clarified many unknowns in the last 10 years and the factors that make up the cancer are better understood. The introduction of treatments such as direct cancer cell therapy, vaccines and immune therapy also contributes to survival rates.
Child desire and gynecologic cancers
Increased incidence of cancer, increased age of marriage and postponing pregnancy to advanced ages due to the work life of women brings cancer and child desire together on average in 10% of women. In women who do not have children, if the cancer is detected at an early stage, the ability to reproduce can be preserved by hormonal or surgical treatment only by removing the cancerous region. After having a child, surgical treatment can be completed if treatment is required.
Cervical cancer and reproduction preserving surgery have been performed in the world for more than 20 years. Considering the pregnancy obtained after the treatment, the results are positive. In early stage uterine cancer, only the cancerous area is removed and the uterus and vagina are combined.
20% of uterine cancer cases are seen under the age of 45, and 5% are under the age of 40. For this reason, the number of patients with uterine cancer and child desire is quite high. In this case, if the disease is at an early stage, meaning, it has not spread outside the inner wall of the uterus and the cell type is not too bad, it can be treated with medication and the patient can get pregnant after the disease has been regressed. In this case, up to 70% success can be achieved with progesterone treatment.
Protection of reproduction in ovarian cancers has also been increasingly applied in recent years. Especially in germ cell ovarian cancers and borderline type ovarian cancers seen at an early age, it is possible to get pregnant only by removing cancerous tissue or cancerous ovaries and protecting the uterus and the other ovary.
These treatments require a significant knowledge and technological infrastructure. Memorial Health Group serves as one of the important centers of our country and Europe in terms of gynecological oncology, medical oncology, radiation oncology and IVF units in terms of evaluating and applying the appropriate method.
Success rates in treatment are increasing with advanced surgical techniques.
Rapidly evolving surgical techniques in the world and Turkey and more common laparoscopic surgeries provide early recovery and reduced risk of open surgery. All this contributes significantly to the early diagnosis and effective treatment of cancer.
Laparoscopic and Robotic surgery are increasingly effective methods of treatment for uterine cancers, cervical cancers and ovarian cancers detected in the early stages. Thanks to these methods, the patient's hospital stay, recovery, return to work and social life period is shortened and the patient does not have any skin damage regarding cosmetics.
In Memorial Health Group, considering the fact that early diagnosis and effective treatment of cancer is very important, diagnosis and treatment of gynecological cancers can be done in western standards. For this, there is a Gynecological Oncology Department with sufficient knowledge and experience in both open surgery and laparoscopic and robotic surgery. In addition, cancer treatment is planned with a hereditary cancer genetic counseling and diagnosis center, medical oncology and high-tech radiation oncology units and a multidisciplinary approach created with our pathology unit experienced in gynecological cancers.
